Best Black Exterior Paint Type

When we purchased this 1970's home, we knew we would paint or stain the wood on the exterior. Fast forward to this past week, picking the the color was simple, we wanted black. But WHAT black was another question. We ended up trying several different stains on the house to determine our favorite. I knew I wanted Tricorn Black on the windows, it is my go-to for a good basic black with no gray, or blue coming through. On the house color we wanted to see a slight contrast so the windows would pop. Of course I spent a lot of time searching online for homes with black exterior, and decided to share 12 of them with you! Also sharing the black paint we picked for our exterior!

We went with Blacktop from Benjamin Moore and LOVE the black so much! It really modernized the exterior. And actually now we like the rock A LOT more. We will need to paint the roof overhang, the roofline black and change the landscaping. But you get the idea of what the black siding and the black windows will look like!

This is our basic plan for the exterior. We are considering staining some of the rock a gray color to add some contrast and break up the gold tones. But still undecided….I am sure I will share it here!

We sampled three different black paint colors on the siding. Sherwin William Iron Ore, Sherwin Williams Black Alder, Sherwin Williams Tricorn Black and Benjamin Moore Blacktop. And we actually had them all mixed into SuperDeck Exterior Stain from Sherwin Williams- you can add any color to this stain. You can do translucent or solid color, we did solid color.

Why stain siding vs paint siding?

You really can't visibly tell the difference. From what we read the advantage of stain is that it will expand and contract more with the wood, it is breathable and it is better with the changing weather. The advantage of paint it dries quicker, in a thicker coat.

If your home was previously painted, it is best to go with paint. For instance if you want to do a stain over paint you would have to sand off the paint. We went with stain because it seemed to be a more durable option for exterior. And our home was stained previously and not painted.
